• Multi-Model Transport

    Multi-Modal Transport also called compound transport, named Multi-Model Transport or Combined Transport, refers to the use of two or more different modes of transport by the Multi-modal Transport Operator (MTO) according to the "Multimodal Transport Contract", which transports the goods from the pick-up point in the country (or region) of origin to the designated delivery point in the country (or region) of destination.

    Note that:

    1.China's maritime law has a special provision for multimodal transport: at least one mode of transport must be sea.

    2.Since China applies different laws and regulations to international maritime transport and coastal/inland river transport, international maritime transport and domestic coastal and inland river transport can be regarded as different modes of transport in China.

    3.Multimodal transport refers to Sea - Air, Sea - Truck, air - Truck and other "combined transport" and Sea - Sea,Truck -Truck, Air - Air and other forms of combined transport (namely transit) has essential difference. Because the former is different mode of transport (means of transport) "combined transport", the latter is the same mode of transport "transit combined transport".

    Necessary conditions for the establishment of multi-modal transport:

    1. A multi-modal transport operator——Organize and be responsible for the whole transportation.

    2. A multimodal transport contract covering the entire length of the transport——The shipper shall settle the freight at one rate only to the multimodal transport operator.

    3. A copy of multimodal transport document(Multimodal bill of lading)——Bill of Lading for Multi-Model Transportation or Bill of Lading for Combined Transport or Multi-Model Transport Bill of Lading etc,A common ocean bill of lading is Bill of Lading or Ocean Bill of Lading.

    4. Must be used two or more different modes of transport (SEA、AIR、RAIL、TRUCK……various combinations) to complete the entire transportation.

    5. At least one mode of transportation must be by sea(Special provisions of China maritime Law).

    Sea-Rail Multi-modal Transportation
